What is the difference between NMN and NR?
Apr 18, 2025
Both NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) and NR (nicotinamide riboside) are precursors of NAD⁺, the central coenzyme for cellular energy, repair and sirtuin activation.
Main differences:
– NMN is a direct NAD⁺ precursor and is rapidly taken up, particularly into tissues such as the liver and muscles
– NR must first be converted into NMN in the body
– In animal experiments, NMN sometimes showed faster and stronger effects, for example on endurance, mitochondrial function and insulin sensitivity
Conclusion: Both substances can increase NAD⁺; NMN is now considered the more effective option, particularly for older people or targeted anti-aging use.
